Mark Evans brings a unique set of skills and experiences to HCS that is unrivalled in its breadth and colorfulness. Born in rural Alberta, Mark has lived and travelled extensively in many areas of Canada and the world. He has worked as a farm labourer, ranch hand, ski instructor, rough neck, truck driver, explosives expert, and garbage man (you can call it sanitation engineer but it still smelled!). After exploring the world by foot and by thumb, Mark attended the University of British Columbia where he received a Bachelor of Arts in Philosophy and Ethics, strengthening his propensity to think outside the box. Mark attended medical school at the University of Western Ontario and a residency program in family medicine at the University of Calgary. During these years, Mark received recognition and awards for teaching and speaking.

After finishing his training, Mark worked and gained experience in rural and urban settings, providing a full spectrum of care that included both family and emergency medicine. Since 2002, Mark has been working as a full time hospitalist at the Calgary General Hospital - Peter Lougheed Centre. In addition to his clinical duties, he has served on many local and provincial committees including the Alberta Scientific Assembly, Acute Care Flow Committee, and GRIDLOCC (Getting Rid of Inappropriate Delays that Limit Our Capacity to Care). He is currently the Quality Improvement Physician for the Division of Acute Care of the Department of Family Medicine and the Calgary Health Region. In this role, he has been responsible for overseeing the innovation of cohesive admission guidelines for the departments of Internal Medicine, Cardiac Sciences, Neurology, General Surgery and Hospitalist Medicine. Mark helped established a discharge visual queue with 93% physician compliance, which achieved a 55% improvement in discharge times. He is currently working in the emergency department to improve the ‘time from consult’ to the ‘decision to admit’. He is also, the Medical Site Leader for the innovative Chronic Complex Care Unit at the Vernon Fanning Centre where he oversees the care of 46 chronically unstable hemodialysis, peritoneal dialysis and/or ventilator patients.
